The soil requires mixing with different amounts of sand and cement, depending on the soil's clay content.
Generally, between 5 to 8 % cement is added to stabilize the block for seismic (durability) purposes.

intro to cebs
Approximately HALF the world's population are living in earthen structures. Some people have confused Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) with Adobe building since Adobe was used in many ancient buildings. CEBs have advanced since the development of the mechanized hyraulic ram for applying pressure to earth blocks. This is a simple, cost-effective, reliable and sustainable building method with minimal impact on the environment.
benefits and uses
Benefits of CEBs:1. Cost and energy efficient due to use of on-site materials and thermal mass (high density) properties. (see below for definition of thermal mass). 2. Fire and pest resistant. 3. Soundproof. 4. Non-toxic 5. Quality of block uniformity, high strength and durability. 6. Simple construction method. 7. Faceblock finish can be painted or plastered.
Thermal mass: is the ability of a material to absorb, store and later release heat. ie: temperature fluctuations will be reduced therefore reducing energy costs and usage.
